LANSING, Mich. (Diya TV) — Michigan House Democratic Leader Ranjeev Puri could become the state’s first Indian American House speaker if Democrats regain the chamber in November and lawmakers elect him to the post.

Puri, who became Michigan’s first Sikh American legislator after winning election in 2020, is seeking another term in the state House. He faces Republican Allison Kay Fuller in the district that includes Canton.

Republicans currently control the chamber under Speaker Matt Hall. A Democratic victory would put Puri in contention for the speakership, but voters do not directly elect the speaker. House members choose the chamber’s leader.

U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens has publicly supported Puri’s potential elevation while campaigning for Democrats. She described his possible speakership as a national milestone for Indian Americans.

Puri leads the House Democratic caucus and previously served as majority whip when Democrats controlled the chamber. He is now completing his third term.

The son of Indian immigrants, Puri worked on Barack Obama’s presidential campaigns in 2008 and 2012. He earned an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business and worked in Michigan’s automotive industry before entering the Legislature.

His legislative work has included transportation funding, infrastructure investment and firearm safety measures. As chair of the transportation appropriations subcommittee during his second term, he helped develop the state’s transportation budget.

The Nov. 3 election will determine whether Puri retains his seat and whether Democrats gain the majority needed to pursue his selection as speaker. No vote choosing the next speaker has taken place.
